Elephant automaton

1892

RCIN 9268

Replicating the badge of the Order of the Elephant, the highest order of Danish chivalry, this automaton was recently identified as the missing surprise of the Imperial Diamond Trellis Egg which Alexander III gave to his consort Maria Feodorovna in 1892. When wound, the elephant walks on ratcheted wheels, lifting its head up and down.

Purchased by King George V, 1935
