Salt cellars in the form of thrones became popular in Russia from about 1845. Placed in front of the guest at the table with a piece of bread on the seat of the throne, they formed an integral part of the traditional bread and salt ceremony of welcome.

Probably acquired by King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra
