JOHN PETTIE (1834-93)
Bonnie Prince Charlie Entering the Ballroom at Holyroodhouse
before 30 Apr 1892RCIN 401247
Prince Charles Edward Stuart (1720 – 1788), also known as Bonnie Prince Charlie, steps triumphantly into the Ballroom at Holyroodhouse. The East Lothian artist Pettie regularly depicted historical themes which were based on fact but subject to historical licence. The Prince did hold court at Holyroodhouse in 1745, but the ball was probably a fictional event, created by Sir Walter Scott in his novel Waverley.
