This painting was commissioned by Queen Victoria soon after Steell was appointed Her Majesty’s Animal Painter for Scotland in 1873. It shows a remote location in the Trossachs which the Queen knew well. She had crossed the Pass of Leny, north of Callander, in 1869, and encountered ‘endless droves of wild looking, very small, shaggy West Highland cattle, with their drovers & dogs – most wild & picturesque – going to Falkirk tryst’.
