JOHN NORDEN (C. 1547-1625)

A Description of the Honor of Windesor.

1607

RCIN 1142252

This bird’s-eye view of Windsor Castle shows how it would have looked when Shakespeare visited. St George’s Chapel is on the right, with the Henry VIII Gate exit opposite. In the centre is the Round Tower, shorter than it is today, with no roof and a tennis court at its base. This Survey of Windsor mapping the extent of Crown lands in and around Berkshire was drawn up for Henry Frederick, eldest son of James VI and I, by John Norden, the surveyor of Crown woods and forests.
