AFTER CHRISTOPHER SAXTON (C.1543-1610/11)
Atlas of England and Wales.
1579RCIN 1046848
Thanks to this atlas, Elizabethans could for the first time have an accurate picture of what their country looked like. As well as a map showing England and Wales, the book contains 34 detailed maps of counties. The surveyor, Christopher Saxton, dedicated his work to his royal patron, Elizabeth I, and included this magnificent hand-coloured, engraved frontispiece which shows the Queen enthroned, flanked by figures representing Cosmography and Geography.
