WENCESLAUS HOLLAR (1607-77)

London [the long view]

1647

RCIN 805316

Hollar’s view of London shows the Globe and Hope theatres on the south bank of the Thames. The Globe was pulled down by Puritans around 1644 – 5, but preliminary sketches at the Yale Center for British Art show that Hollar was preparing this image in the late 1630s. The Globe has been mislabelled ‘Beere bayting’, while the building labelled ‘The Globe’ is the Hope theatre, built by Philip Henslowe on the site of the old Bear Garden.
