QUEEN VICTORIA, QUEEN OF THE UNITED KINGDOM (1819-1901)
Romeo and Juliet
circa 1834circa 1835RCIN 980069
Princess Victoria’s rendering of Romeo leaving Juliet to go into exile, sketched in 1834 – 5, was inspired by the composition of Moritz Retzsch from his Shakespeare Gallery. It was not until 1840 that she first saw the play. She described the performance in her journal as ‘a beautiful play ... Miss Emmeline Montague took the part of Juliet, & was charming in the Balcony Scene, but not so good afterwards.’
