STYLE OF GIOVANNI BATTISTA FOGGINI (1652-1725)

Casket and stand

c.1720

RCIN 11895

Caskets of this type were originally designed to hold precious objects such as jewels, but their rich decoration made them valuable in their own right. Incorporating brilliantly coloured carved hardstones and richly mounted in gilt bronze, this casket is typical of the work of the Grand Ducal Workshops in Florence in the early eighteenth century under the direction of the sculptor Giovanni Battista Foggini. Acquired during the 18th century
