Franco spent much of his career in Rome and Florence, and on his return to his native Venice he continued to work in a central Italian style, seen here in the precision of the chalk lines. His eclectic paintings were less successful than his prints, of which he produced about a hundred, sometimes on an unusually large scale. This is a study for his engraving of the Flagellation of Christ.
