POMPONIO AMALTEO (1505-88)
The Martyrdom of St Stephen
c.1535-40RCIN 906664
Pomponio Amalteo was the pupil of Pordenone (no. 82), and his drawings were indebted to the example of his master. This careful drawing was presumably the model for a lost altarpiece. The composition follows Giulio Romano’s painting of the same subject in Santo Stefano, Genoa, which Amalteo may have seen when working in that city with Pordenone around 1532.
