Hendrick Pot was a Dutch artist working in London for Charles I in 1632. This is a royal family portrait with a twist of symbolism: the baby Prince of Wales has thrown down some laurel leaves, which symbolise the glory of kingship, while he holds up an olive branch, which symbolises the greatest virtue which a king can bestow, namely Peace.
