This study was taken by Hogarth from a life model at the St Martin’s Lane Academy. The Academy, which was founded in 1720, was a meeting place for artists, who would gather to draw and socialise. Hogarth repeatedly studied life models as a means of improving his technique, a practice which could be traced back to the training of the old masters.
