WILLIAM HOGARTH (1697-1764)

Hogarth's trade card

dated 23 Apr 1720

RCIN 811305

Made by the young engraver to advertise his new business, Hogarth’s trade card also acted as a means of demonstrating his talent. It shows his ability to engrave different scripts, to delineate figures and to furnish a variety of decorative devices. The putti in the upper border hold a print and a covered cup, examples of Hogarth’s work as a printmaker and an engraver of metalwork. In the Royal Collection by 1845 Cat. 74
