WILLIAM HOGARTH (1697-1764)
The Battle of the Pictures
1745RCIN 811767
In February 1745, Hogarth auctioned many of the oil paintings on which his prints had been based. Bidding at the auction was by ticket, as usual decorated with a witty Hogarth picture. Here historic paintings are shown marching into battle with Hogarth’s works. The second scene of Marriage à-la-Mode competes with the ancient Roman Aldobrandini Wedding and A Midnight Modern Conversation battles an unidentified bacchanalian scene.
