WILLIAM HOGARTH (1697-1764)

The Proportions of Garrick and Quin

21 Oct 1746

RCIN 913477

This letter, sent to an unidentified ‘T.H.’ contrasts the figures of James Quin and David Garrick, popular actors who were at the time performing together in The Fair Penitent. Hogarth proposes an experiment to study the perception of proportion. The letter may be his response to criticism of a print after his painting of Garrick as Richard III, which had been published on 20 June 1746. Purchased by George IV in 1821 Cat. 91
