Four of a set of five saddle-steels of Henry VIII

c.1540-5

RCIN 67652

These protective plates were attached to a saddle. They are richly etched with designs possibly derived from engravings after Raphael. Although the decoration is now worn and difficult to read, it would originally have been completely gilded. Like the spaudlers and vambraces, these saddle steels were recorded in the Royal Armouries in Greenwich in 1555.
