Erhard Altdorfer was one of a group of artists (the Danube School) who produced small-scale works in which figures are dwarfed by dramatic landscapes. This drawing was probably produced as a finished work of art rather than in preparation for a painting and may have been intended for one of a growing number of collectors of drawings and prints. St George was the object of widespread devotion in sixteenth-century Germany.
