AUGUSTIN HIRSCHVOGEL (1503-53)

The Crucifixion

1533

RCIN 912172

In this large drawing, the designer and cartographer Augustin Hirschvogel shows Golgotha, site of the Crucifixion, crowded with figures. The drawing appears to have been made as a finished work of art rather than as a preparatory study, but the way in which it would have been displayed is not clear.
