Pair of council chairs

1812

RCIN 2629

The robust classical design of this pair of chairs is derived from a combination of two classical fragments, published in the architect Charles Heathcote Tatham’s highly influential Etchings … of Ancient Ornamental Architecture of 1799. They were originally covered in pale blue silk for use in the Large Blue Velvet Room, then in blue velvet for the Old Throne Room, and then in crimson velvet for use in the New Throne Room, where one can be seen from the back in the Pyne watercolour.

Supplied to George IV, 1812
