Pair of pedestals
c.1762RCIN 2544
One pedestal bears the head and attributes of Apollo, the sun-god, who drove his four-horsed chariot (called a quadriga) across the skies to bring in the new day. The other pedestal bears the head and attributes of Diana, goddess of the moon and therefore night. The pedestals originally supported clocks; the Diana pedestal showing Lunar time and the Apollo pedestal showing Solar time.
