The sofa is carved with lions’ heads at each side, emblematic of Hercules. Below the seat is a richly carved section of oak leaves, sacred to Jupiter. Each arm and foot is carved with palm leaves, signifying triumph. At the centre of the top rail is a shell, emblematic of Venus, who was born of the sea in a scallop shell.

Supplied to George IV, 1814
