The central plaque depicts playing putti or ‘loves’, the attendants of Venus and her son, Cupid. Around them are various implements, indicating an allegory of the Sciences: a celestial globe, geometric instruments, and a pedestal inscribed ‘DOCTRINA’ (Latin for ‘Learning’).
