EDWARD HENRY CORBOULD (1815-1905)

Hetty Sorrel and Captain Donnithorne in Mrs Poyser's dairy

dated 1861

RCIN 451113

This scene from George Eliot’s Adam Bede is a pair to Dinah Morris Preaching. It depicts the young heir to Donnithorne Chase admiring the flirtatious Hetty Sorrel who works in her aunt’s dairy. As a pair, the works contrast the behaviour of the virtuous and modest Dinah with the extrovertly self-aware Hetty.

Commissioned by Queen Victoria in 1860
