A pensive Napoleon Bonaparte, First Consul of France, is depicted crossing the Alps with his military entourage en route to surprise the Austrian army in Italy. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert visited Napoleon’s tomb during their state visit to Paris in 1855 as guests of his nephew, Emperor Napoleon III, an occasion the Queen found particularly poignant.

Purchased by Queen Victoria and presented to Prince Albert on his birthday, 26 August 1853
