The relief-carved pietra dura top of this table, given by Tsar Nicholas I to the Queen following his state visit in June 1844, was made at Peterhof, the best-known of the imperial stone workshops; Tegelstein’s gilt-bronze base came from Nichols & Plincke, the fashionable ‘English Shop’ in St Petersburg.
