RICHARD PRINCIPAL LEITCH (1826-82)

Gorey Castle, Jersey

dated 1860

Pencil, watercolour and bodycolour | 46.2 x 32.5 cm (whole object) | RCIN 920248

The son of Victoria’s watercolour teacher William Leitch, Richard received a royal commission in 1860 for three views of Jersey ‘according to the Queen’s requests’, which suggests Victoria probably specifi ed the subjects. One of the views was this romanticised scene of the impressive castle with a sleeping fi sherman on the quay, where the royal yacht had anchored for a night during a tour the previous summer.
