Mary Herbert and her husband Henry, Lord Lieutenant of Kerry, hosted the royal family on a visit to Ireland in August 1861. Like the Queen, Mary painted in watercolours for most of her adult life and was a celebrated landscape painter. The Times newspaper claimed that ‘among water-colour artists Mrs Herbert is held to be the most gifted amateur in the kingdom’.
