The Swiss Cottage was a playhouse built for the royal children within the gardens at Osborne, where they had their own space to play and learn skills such as gardening, cooking and sewing. William Leighton Leitch regularly visited Osborne when the royal family were in residence, giving Victoria lessons and painting scenes of family life such as this one.
