PAUL SANDBY (1731-1809)

Castle Hill from the Town Gate, Windsor Castle

c.1765

RCIN 453596

The landscape watercolourist and topographical draughtsman Paul Sandby spent much time at Windsor, and between the 1750s and the end of the century he produced numerous views of the Castle and the surrounding parkland. The view of Castle Hill from the old Town Gate shows the southern side of the Lower Ward of the Castle: the backs of the Military Knights’ houses are on the left with the square Garter Tower and the curved Henry III Tower. The houses on the right were private residences.
