In 1764 the architect and topographical draughtsman Thomas Sandby was appointed Steward to the Ranger of Windsor Great Park, the Duke of Cumberland. From around 1770 he occupied Deputy Ranger’s Lodge. In the 1790s the house was recorded in several watercolours by Thomas’s younger brother Paul Sandby, who made a large number of views of Windsor Castle and buildings in the Great Park during the reign of George III.
