    St Helena was chosen as the site of Napoleon’s exile due to its remote location – in the middle of the south Atlantic, around 2,000km off the coast of Africa. The island has been governed by Britain since the seventeenth century. The emperor arrived on the island on 15 October after a voyage of over two months, and would remain there until his death in 1821.
