Napoleon on his Death-Bed
c.1821RCIN 917798
The naval officer Frederick Marryat was stationed on St Helena from 1820. He was able to view, and draw, Napoleon’s body shortly after the Emperor’s death on 5 May 1821. Despite French requests for the return of his body to France, Napoleon was buried on St Helena. His remains were transferred to Paris in 1840.
