SIR THOMAS LAWRENCE (1769-1830)

Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (1769-1852)

1814-15

RCIN 405147

Lawrence's portrait heralds the Duke of Wellington as a national hero. Standing beneath a triumphal arch, he holds aloft the Sword of State, symbolising royal authority. His Field Marshal's baton, an emblem of his office, lies beside a letter signed George P.R. signifying the gratitude of the Crown. Behind him a procession leads to the thanksgiving service celebrating peace in Europe, held at St Paul’s Cathedral in July 1814.
