This baton is the symbol of a Maréchal (Marshal), granted to French generals for outstanding military achievements. It belonged to Marshal Jourdan, who fought during the Peninsular Wars under the command of Napoleon's brother, Joseph. The baton was captured by Wellington at the Battle of Vitoria (in Spain) in 1813 and presented to the Prince Regent, who created him Field Marshal in return.
