The Virgin and Child ('The Colonna Madonna')

c. 1848-58

RCIN 404017

For Christmas 1858, Prince Albert presented this porcelain plaque to Queen Victoria, reproducing a painting by Raphael executed around 1508.

For the Prince, Raphael was the greatest of the Old Masters. The inscription ‘The Prince Consort’s favourite picture’ on the reverse of the porcelain copy shows how highly this particular image was regarded.

With this present Albert shared his love for Raphael with Victoria.
