RCIN 29469

Mahatma Gandhi (1869–1948) was an Indian lawyer, politician and social activist who led the nationalist movement against British rule in India. He promoted a policy of non-violent protest known as satyagraha and today is considered the father of modern India. This head and shoulders portrait has been embroidered in dark hair on white silk to create a delicate likeness.

Presented to Queen Elizabeth II by Miss Ratnamala Jadhav during her State Visit to India, 1961.
