MEXICO

Sword

circa 1975

RCIN 93422

Scenes of dancing and horse riding embellish the blade of this sword, and the end of the grip is in the form of an eagle, the national bird of Mexico. An embroidery technique called piteado, using thread from the fibre of the century plant (agave americana), has been used to decorate the leather scabbard. Pre-Columbian patterns, plants and animals appear in the design. The embroidered initials 'PF' stand for 'Principe Felipe' (Prince Philip).

Presented with saddle to Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh by the Governor of Veracruz, Rafael Hernández Ochoa, during the State Visit to Mexico, 28 February 1975.
