In November and December 1961, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh undertook a tour of West Africa. This wood, leather and braid walking stick was presented to The Duke of Edinburgh by the Northern Region House of Chiefs in Tamale, Ghana. 

Ghana is divided into 16 administrative areas, each of which has its own regional House of Chiefs. The House serves as an advisory council which adjudicates on traditional matters, tribal law and custom.
