A Maori mere (flattened club-shaped weapon) pounamu functioned as a hand club to be carried in a warrior's flax belt. It was a treasured heirloom, passed from generation to generation, and owned only by chiefs of the highest standing.

This mere was presented to Queen Elizabeth II in 1964 by Canon Hamiora Rangiihu on behalf of Chief Paora Rerepu Te Urupu. The mere had been used by the Chief's forebears to fight the incoming Europeans and giving it Queen Elizabeth II was seen as a conciliatory gesture.
