Pair of corner cupboards
1780Oak, mahogany, satinwood, sycamore, purplewood, holly, gilt bronze | 96.1 x 101.5 x 69.2 cm (whole object) | RCIN 21212
In January 1780 Riesener was called to Louis XVI’s private study at Versailles in order to take measurements of the room, and the furniture in it, including Louis XV’s roll-top desk and a chest of drawers, so that he may make this pair of complementary corner cupboards. Both cupboards share many stylistic similarities with the chest of drawers, including a curved front, scrolling acanthus feet, a Hercules mask frieze and console mounts in the form of female terms.
