Jean-Henri Riesener
Furniture by one of the greatest cabinet-makers of the eighteenth century
Riesener at Waddesdon Manor
Brother and sister, Ferdinand and Alice de Rothschild were part of a new generation of collectors in the late nineteenth century who were particularly interested in the authenticity and provenance of their Riesener furniture. They used maker’s marks, garde-meuble stamps and cyphers to help identify it and often recorded object histories in notes and other writings.
Their furniture now forms part of the collection at Waddesdon Manor (National Trust).
