Jean-Henri Riesener

Furniture by one of the greatest cabinet-makers of the eighteenth century

FRENCH

Writing desk

probably nineteenth century (1840–60?) using some older parts

Oak, conifer, walnut, purplewood, satiné, tulipwood, stained woods, burr wood, ebony or ebonised wood, box, gilt bronze, Carrara marble | 114.1 x 59.2 x 49.5 cm | F306

Though lauded in the nineteenth century as a great work of eighteenth-century design, the techniques used to construct this writing desk (and a series of alterations) are uncharacteristic of Riesener and suggest that it was probably made in France in the middle of the nineteenth century.
