King George V's War Museum

A collection displayed at Windsor Castle by George V following the First World War

GERMANY

Placard

1916

RCIN 69429

This placard was erected by German soldiers on 1 May 1916, at Hulluch on the Western Front. The German lines were opposite the 8th Royal Munster Fusiliers and the Fusiliers shot at the sign before capturing it in a night raid some days later. It was subsequently presented to King George V who placed it on display in his war museum at Windsor Castle. The message reads:

'Interesting War News

of April 29th 1916

Kut el Amara has been taken in

by the Turcs and the whole english

army therein

---13000 men---

maken prisoners'

The Germans hoped that by telling the Irish troops of a defeat they might be encouraged to surrender, an example of front line propaganda.
