Model of a Jaipur House
c.1866-76RCIN 42376
Ram Singh II, Maharaja of Jaipur presented the Prince with a painted and gilded plaster model of a townhouse, called haveli. The front of the house is painted with murals of richly caparisoned elephants and courtiers. The architecture of Jaipur was particularly striking and the pinkish hue of the buildings had earned Jaipur the title of 'The Pink City' and Russell described the houses as ‘if they were built of solid strawberry creams streaked in white arabesque’.
