Amber, made up of a complex of palaces housed within a fort, was the former capital of the rulers of Jaipur until 1724. The Prince visited the old capital on 4 February, where after a morning of sightseeing, the tour party enjoyed a picnic on the terrace of one of the palaces. Russell was so taken by the extraordinary beauty and elaborately executed design of the buildings that he described some of the Palace rooms as being ‘inlaid as if they were pieces of jewellery’.
