SEBASTIANO RICCI (BELLUNO 1659-VENICE 1734)
The Sacrifice of Polyxena
c. 1726-30RCIN 404763
This is a modello for a larger painting that was perhaps never executed. The compositional study on display nearby varies from this painting. Here an equestrian statue of Achilles has been introduced and Achilles son, Neoptolemus, performs the sacrifice rather than the priest, who in Ovid's story was 'weeping and remorseful' as he killed her.
