PHILIP RUNDELL (1746-1827)
Stand (part of The Grand Service)
hallmark 1819/20RCIN 51496
A set of four silver-gilt rounded triangular stands with incurved sides. The cover is engraved with the Prince of Wales' feathers, within a border of anthemion scrolls. The stand is embossed with scallop shells and tritons, with further shells and masks of Neptune applied at the corners. The stand rests on paired dolphin feet.
These stands were designed to support four seven-light candelabra (RCIN 50841 and 50842) as part of the Grand Service. Rather than reflecting the Egyptian motifs of the candelabra, the stands take up the marine themes used elsewhere in the Grand Service - such as the tritons and dolphins. These ultimately derive from the service created for Frederick, Prince of Wales in the 1740s by Nicholas Sprimont, which was clearly much admired by George IV.
