JOHANNES VORSTERMAN (C. 1643-1699?)
A View of Windsor Castle
1678-80RCIN 405265
In this view of Windsor Castle from the north, a flood of sunlight streaming through a gap in the clouds highlights the newly completed Star Building. This addition, so called because of the large star of the Order of the Garter painted on the north front, was overseen by the architect Hugh May and probably completed by 1677. It contained a magnificent set of State Apartments decorated with rich furnishings, carvings by Grinling Gibbons and painted ceilings by Antonio Verrio.
