PETER VANDREBANC (1649–1697) AFTER ANTONIO VERRIO (C. 1639-1707)
The ceiling of the King's Presence Chamber
c.1682-6RCIN 700584
In the King's Presence Chamber (now known as the Garter Throne Room), Verrio painted a fictive portrait of Charles II surrounded by palm-fronds, being presented by Mercury, the god of war, to the four quarters of the globe, an allusion to the king as the bringer of peace. This ceiling was one of three at Windsor etched in large scale by the French engraver, Peter Vandrebanc.
